War Grid Released

Over on the DBB, Sapphire Wolf just announced the release of a new D2 multiplayer level called "War Grid."  Just in time for Christmas!

"Slightly inspired by an old Descent 2 level, Areneon as well as the movie, Tron. The level is mostly all wireframe grid textures, I put alot of heart and effort to make this level different from Areneon as of terms of cyber archetecture and such. The normal blue grid area consists of a small water area, the red of course is fire, Ice Blue grid area is the Ice-ish area, and the green area is the generic grid area. This level is good for like 3 on 3 CTF or 2 on 2 CTF (slightly recommended) or whatever. Took me several hours to complete this level. Anyways, What are you waiting for? Get this level! Blast away everyone in this level, and of course, have fun!" -Sapphire Wolf

Download today!  You can also get it at the DMDB.

Leaderboards and Tracker Shutting Down

Since my financial situation has changed for the worst, I am forced to reduce costs.  Shared hosting is considerably cheaper.  However, due to limitations of shared hosting, we must sacrifice two key site features in the short term.  Those include Leaderboards and the Tracker.  There is a small possibility one or both features will come back in some form, but no ETA or if it will be as fully featured as before.  If each of us site operators continue to focus on independent areas of functionality, one person does not have to bear the entire financial burden.  Perhaps one day we will unite under one site.  :-)

Descent 1 and 2 Missions Database Upgrade

No longer do you have to download large mission packs for D1 and D2 to get the one mission you're looking for.  You can now find it via our searchable and sortable Missions Database.  I think you're going to like it!  Oh, and if you do want to download the large mission pack, it's in there too under "D1 Missions Pack" and "D2 Missions Pack."

If you'd like to submit your Descent mission to be posted on the site, see the instructions at the bottom of the mission database.

Valhalla II Servers Shutting Down

Unfortunately, only one person subscribed so the Valhalla II D3 servers and SOD will be shut down effective today.  It's unfortunate because they were popular for beginners and competitive players alike due to its great connection and eclectic mix of missions that were NOT Subway Dancer.

DV Needs Your Help... Oh, and SOD is released!

The website and Valhalla II game servers have been running for almost two years now.  It has remained online mainly because of donations received so far.  In that time several great services have been created including:
  • Combined Descent Game Tracker
  • High performing, automatically rotating Valhalla II D3 servers
  • Leaderboards
  • Many helpful guides
The Valhalla II D3 server has had over 5,000 games played with almost a million kills recorded.  It's been a great ride and we all want to see it continue.  Unfortunately, RL™ has taken a huge chunk of my income.  It's been almost five months since we've received a single donated dollar.  I have now put up several hundred dollars to keep the game server running to this point.  That's not even including the web server costs.  That's also not including the time to set up and configure the games and deal with the hosts billing issues.  So this is a plea for the Descent community to pitch in and lend a helping hand.

Instead of me just asking for one-time donations, which would help but would result in this post again in several months, I am looking to create a group of subscribers.  The more of us that band together, the smaller the costs will be for all of us.  As an incentive, I decided to create a new service where only subscribers will have access to create a dedicated, custom Valhalla II D3 server.  The SOD feature has gone live today.  I have programmed it in such a way that immediately upon subscribing, you can log out and back in, and you'll be able to create your own custom D3 servers.

The magic number is 7.  If we can get and maintain 7 subscribers, these wonderful services can remain online.  Best case scenario, if we get more than 7, we could reduce the cost for each of us!  However, if we are unable to get any subscribers, the game servers and possibly the website will have to be taken offline. Please do not assume someone else will swoop in and save the day (e.g. bystander effect).

Thank you very much for your consideration.  If you're reading this, you're probably one of the people we need.  You guys rock and I'm hoping I can create the post that says this baby can remain online. I will update the contributors page with the subscribers as we get them.  If you want to be anonymous, that's fine too.
